How to Print Your Book

How to Upload Your Files

Step 1: Prepare Your Files. Ensure your manuscript and cover design are ready and in the correct format (PDF is preferred for its reliability). Check our file preparation guidelines for detailed specifications.

Step 2: Upload Your Files. Navigate to the 'Upload Files' section and select High-Tail. We can also accept files through WeTransfer, Dropbox or email.

Colour Options

We offer a range of colour options to bring your book to life:

  • Full Color: Ideal for books with photographs, illustrations, or graphics that require vibrant reproduction.
  • Black and White: Best suited for novels, manuals, and texts where clarity and readability are key.

When your book has a mix of mono and colour pages, we print all the colour pages on our Canon or Ricoh presses and then insert the colour pages into the mono text when printing. This reduces the overall cost of your book and ensures that all colour pages are printed to a high quality.

Cover Specifications

Material: Choose from our selection of high-quality cover materials, including 260gsm and 300gsm cover boards. If you want something different, we have the option of ordering cover materials from GF Smith.

Design: Ensure your cover design is in CMYK colour mode and includes the back, spine, and front as a single file. We can help you create a cover for your book.

Booklet covers: Booklet covers do not need a spine so please make sure the cover is just the front and rear pages.

Inside covers: If you want printing on the inside covers you will need to provide this cover as a separate file.

Bleed

Bleed is the extra margin on the edge of your pages that is trimmed off. This ensures your background extends to the edge of the page after trimming.

  • Standard Bleed: 3mm (0.118 inch) around each side of your page.
  • PPC Bleed: Hardback PPC covers will need 20mm of bleed around your cover to wrap around the cover boards.

Binding Options

Select the binding that best suits your book:

  • Perfect Binding: A flexible and durable option for paperback books.
  • PUR Binding: A premium version of perfect binding that is great for books with heavy use.
  • Hardback Binding: Offers a sturdy and premium finish for your book.
  • Sewn Binding: A standard option for hardbacks.
  • Saddle Stitched: A budget-friendly option for booklets, magazines and marketing material.

Spine Specifications

Paperback and hardback books must have a spine in your cover design file.

The number of pages in your book determines the spine width. Use our spine width calculator on the website for an accurate measurement.

Saddle stitched booklets do not need to have a spine design and the cover design should only have the front and rear covers.

Hardback Book Covers

Our hardback books are bound using a 2750 micron board. There are two main options for hardback covers, PPC and Wibalin bound with a Dustjacket.

PPC: This stands for Printed Paper Case. The PPC is glues onto, and wrapped around the hardback boards. This allows for the hardcover to feature full-color designs, text, and graphics directly on it, eliminating the need for a separate dust jacket.

Wibalin Bound with Dustjacket: This is similar to the PPC, but instead of a paper cover wrapped around the hardback we use a cloth material called wibalin. This is for a more classic hardback book. Many customers choose to have a Wibalin bound hardback and have foil blocking applied to the cover. We then provide a dustjacket with your design to wrap around the hardback for protection.

Lamination

We offer lamination options for added durability and a professional touch:

  • Gloss Lamination: Bright and shiny finish.
  • Matt Lamination: A subtle and tactile finish.
  • Soft-touch Matt Lamination: Smooth premium finish.

Endpapers

Endpapers are the sheets of paper that attach your book's pages to its cover. Paperback book endpapers are the first and last pages in your book. You can have these pages with any design, text or colour on. Hardback book endpapers are plain white and are additional to your text pages. We can provide many different paper stocks if you want your endpapers to be special. We can use your own design and use printed endpapers if you wish.
